Used for dispensing viscous fluids, lotions pumps are widely used for products such as lquid soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo and face wash, to name a few. Although there is plethora of variety available of lotion pumps these days but the fundamental mechanism remain the same.

We shall delve into major parts of lotion pumps and understand how they function.

Key parts of a Lotion Pump

A Lotion Pump is typically made up of following six components:

Actuator

Head of the Lotion Pump, it is usually made of polypropylene. Working as the pump head, it performs the primary task of discharging material from the lotion pump reservoir when pressed from above.

Closure

Tthis unit performs the most important task of securing the entire material in the neck of the lotion pump. It is vital to ensure that the entire assembly is secured.

Outer Gasket

It helps in preventing the leakage of material from the bottle land area. Typically made of low-density polyethylene or rubber, is usually friction-fitted inside the closure.

Housing

Housing unit assembles all the parts of the lotion pump in one place. Apart from that, it also functions as transfer vessel of sending material to the actuator from the dip tube.

Internal Housing Components

Internal Housing Components containing of Ball, Spring, Piston & Stem, the inner housing compartment. The specification may vary from manufacturer to another.

Dip Tube

Made of polypropylene, it is a long tube extending from the head of lotion pump to its extreme bottom.

Working Principle of a Lotion Pump

Step 1 – functioning in sync with the principle of air suction equipment, it operates against gravity. When the head is pressed, friction generated in the inner wall forces to the piston t open.

Step 2 – the piston gets shifted when the actuator is depressed, and this in turn compresses the spring. It exerts pressure upwards inside the dip tube. Further the material in the dip tube reaches the lotion pump chambers.

Step 3 – As soon as the actuator is released, the ball goes down stopping the flow of the material ensuring that it doesn’t return back to the bottom of the lotion pump.

Step 4 – when the liquid in body liquid storage cavity is full, the liquid is dispensed by pressing the head again.
